What do roses, elephants and the world have in common?
Beats me. This odd mural on the building at Burnside and 1st Avenue in Portland is being painted over, so I consider it my duty to archive it for future generations to puzzle over.
And if you can decipher its meaning--please, enlighten the rest of us.

This is a mural approved to be painted on this building in the 1990's by the Department of the Interior. The elephant is Packy the elephant, who in 1962 was the first elephant born in captivity in 45 years right here in Portland. Packy, at 46, is now the largest, and oldest elephant in captivity. The globes represent the world fame generated at Packy's birth. The roses represent Portland which is the Rose City. I guess it is a bit of a shame this is to be covered over but being a fairly recent mural could not really be considered historic.

The building is being remodeled to become the new home of Mercy Corps.
My correction. I discovered today that the building is not being remodeled. It's being demolished to make way for new construction.
